CHILD & FAMILY THERAPY
At Keystone Child and Family Therapy our mission is to equip children and their families with the skills necessary to navigate difficult experiences that impact psychological wellbeing and impede development. It is our desire to facilitate and strengthen the growth of healthy relationships which contribute to optimal development and wellbeing for children and their families.
“Play therapists universally recognize that treatment has been successfully completed when the child demonstrates an ability to play with joyous abandon – this is what makes play therapy unique.”
(K. O’Connor, 2000, p. 7)
Marital & Family Therapy
Play therapy is a form of therapy that utilizes a child’s most natural medium of communicationand self-expression. Through play, children learn about the world; express and process thoughts, feelings, and experiences; and gain both social and self-awareness. Play therapy allows children to engage in the therapeutic process in a way that is most natural and familiar to them. It is difficult for children to talk about their thoughts and feelings as adults do because of their developmental limitations and defence mechanisms. Play therapy gives children the ability to engage in similar self-expression through the use of play and art-based activities. Play therapy is a well established research based approach premised on developmental principles and promotes optimal growth and change in the child through the intervention of a trained child therapist.
Marital and Family Therapy:
Family therapy is also an important aspect of working with children, as they are not isolated individuals. The problems a child is struggling with can be stressful to the family environment and can create additional concerns for other family members. Additionally, the family environment may also be maintaining or intensifying the difficulties the child is struggling with.
Often families can find themselves stuck in a frustrating cycle, feeling like they are out of solutions to try to change the situation. Marital and family therapy seeks to foster change in the environment and between family members. It emphasizes the health of family relationships and believes that this impacts an individual’s well-being. Marital and family therapy enhances the play therapy by allowing the therapist to not only work with the child but also the family environment in which the child is embedded and impacted by.
